    W. Ralph Eubanks earned his B.A. in Psychology in 1978, and built a distinguished career in publishing industry. The author and essayist is a Faculty Fellow and Writer in Residence at Center for the Study of Southern Culture, University of Mississippi.

Alum Spotlight

After graduation from UM in 1978, Ralph Eubanks earned his M.A. in English from the University of Michigan. His career in the publishing industry included editing and management positions at the American Geophysical Union, American Psychological Association's books and journals, Hemisphere/Taylor and Francis, Library of Congress, and Virginia Quarterly Review. After serving as the Eurdora Welty Visiting Professor in Southern Studies at Millsaps College, Eubanks has held several positions at the University of Mississippi, including Visiting Professor of English and Southern Studies, Writer-in-Resident, and Faculty Fellow.

W. Ralph Eubanks is the author of  (2021 Timber Press), a tour of the landscape of Mississippi and the many ways this landscape has informed the work of some of America's most treasured authors. His other books include (2003 Basic Books) and  (2011 HarperCollins). His next book, When It's Darkness on the Delta: How America's Richest Soil Became Its Poorest Land, which focuses on the Mississippi Delta, will be published January 13, 2026 by Beacon Press.

He has contributed articles to the Washington Post Outlook and Style sections, ,The Wall Street Journal, , and National Public Radio. 

Eubanks has received many awards and distinguished fellowships, including a 2007 Guggenheim Fellowship, fellowship at the New America Foundation, 2021-2022 Carl and Lily Pforzheimer Foundation Fellow at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Study at Harvard University, and 2023 Mississippi Governor's Arts Award for excellence in literature and as a cultural ambassador for Mississippi.
